This activity introduced the children to the idea of male and female, and the idea that we can sometimes tell the difference between them by looking and sometimes not.
We talked about the ways they can identify whether someone is a boy or girl. Clothing, hair length, games that are preferred, first names and of course genitalia.
We came to the conclusion that some girls have short hair and some boys have long hair; some girls are good at what are traditionally regarded as boys' games; first names do not always indicate gender (Sam, Robbie, Lindsay, Gerry, Charlie to name a few).
We also talked about animals whose sex we can tell just by their appearance. A lion and lioness, peacock and peahen, cow and bull.
Next week we will be looking at gender stereotypes.
