Male and female
This activity introduced the idea of male and female, and the idea that we can sometimes tell the difference between them by looking and sometimes not.
The children were asked to think of all the ways they can identify whether someone is a boy or girl. There responses included, clothing, length of hair, preferred games, first names, favourite colours and bodies. We discussed the effectiveness of these attributes in determining someone's sex; for example, some girls have short hair and some boys have long hair; first names do not always indicate gender (Sam, Lesley, Charlie, George and so on).
The children then had to complete a sheet where they had to try and identify which animal was male and which was female just based on appearance.
